A simple checklist for improving your personal security

Today we’re launching a new Casa Security Checklist to help anyone improve their online security. It’s a free resource that provides information like:

• What digital security tools should you be using? (like password managers)
• Why are these tools important?
• What’s the next step to improve your personal security?

At Casa, our mission is to maximize personal sovereignty and safety. Individual sovereignty comes with an increased responsibility to educate yourself on personal security. With this simple tool, we’re aiming to help you do just that.

The problem

Keeping up with best practices for personal security is hard. People today have hundreds of online accounts. Often they use the same password for each account. They don’t know about or understand the value of password managers or two-factor authentication.

Take that a step further into the realm of cryptocurrencies. Maybe more people know what 2FA is, because they use it to sign into exchanges. But do they know about the importance of owning their own keys? Using a hardware wallet? The dangers of SMS-based 2FA?

Of the people who know about these basic forms of online security, how many actually implement it?

“It won’t happen to me.”

“I’m busy; I’ll do it later.”

Then it DOES happen to you. One of your passwords is cracked and someone on the other side of the world is tweeting from your account. Or even worse, searching through your email. Or even worse, siphoning all your funds from one of your exchange accounts.

Why not take a few steps to secure yourself against known attacks?

The solution

We have to teach people about the importance of personal security, or cryptocurrencies will never succeed.

We’ve created a simple checklist tool to walk people through the basic threats and give concrete next steps on securing themselves. We have a metaphor for this process — building your Digital Castle.

As you go through the Security Checklist, you’ll see an image of a castle start to build and track your progress. It’s a small but fun way to show that you’re improving over time. You also might notice that the final state is only a single tower…a hint for the future?? 😉

For each of the five basic security measures, we have an explanation of:

• What is the security measure?
• Why is it important?
• What is Casa’s suggestion for securing yourself?
